The Matchbox Collections

Hand-painted matchboxes

The project

The Matchbox Collections seek solace in order and take comfort in the familiar.

Gathered from various media, artists and moments in time, and faithfully rendered in oil, the chosen images are grouped in sets of 10 – an attempt to shrink important elements of popular culture, art and history down to a more manageable size.

The images welcome. The small scale beckons. The familiar everydayness of the objects asks to be held.

Started in 2007 and completed in 2010, the project represents about 1500 hours of painting.

Each Beehive matchbox measures 36mm x 52mm and is complete with its original contents – between 40 and 50 matches.
